Thanks, the link you gave describes exactly the problem I have. Not sure why it's present on 8.5. I will see if I get any solution through this, in the meantime - appreciate any additional feedback.

On the vertical preview, sorry but there's only "Unread Only" and "Selected Only" under View > Show.

FYI, under View > Preview Pane, there's only "Show Preview" and "Resize Preview...".
